I start out by saying the discovery of metal. Flexible building materials help good ideas come to life. Think what Archimedes could have done with better metal technology. mark

(I say metal when I really mean Turkey. The Turkey is a noble bird ready and willing to lay down its life for my table)

The following inventions are considered to be some of the greatest inventions in modern history:

Printing Press
Automobile
Internet
Computer
Mobile
TV
Antibiotics

However the "<b>The Transistor</b>" is the most important because some of the above inventions would not possible. It the most commonly used component in practically all modern electronics. Hence in my opinion "<b>The Transistor</b>", is one of the greatest inventions invented by mankind.

I realize this is very typically the response to this question, but I think it's silly to consider anything other than "fire" as the answer to this question. It really is the single most useful human invention ever. Humans, with their bare hands can catch fish, small game, and occasionally even larger animals. They can pick plants, and clean them. They can mate, fight, and communicate all with their natural tools. With fire though, they get sterilized food, disinfection of wounds, protection from predators they cannot defeat naturally, warmth, light. Fire is at the core of what we've become. Without fire we would not be sitting here doing what we're doing.
