<b>[shando] "... jail, which is where we in a free society send those who, for whatever reason, choose to disobey our democratically implemented laws."</b>
Hmmm.
Those who lean right often say that Socialism is broken.
Those who lean left yell back that Capitalism is not working.
A fair examination of the evidence in front of us reveals that they are both correct. And both of these models produce societies that slide back and forth on those scales I was just talking about.
WTF?
<center>KINDS OF SOCIETAL ORGANIZATION</center><center>DICTATORSHIP <==============================> FREEDOM</center>
<center>(via Socialism or Capitalism) <font color="blue"> . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . </font id="blue"> (via Socialism or Capitalism)</center>
Think about the common denominator between the average Socialist society and the average Capitalist society.

<b>[shando, from a post in the 'system design' topic] "In my utopia, the hand of government is invisible ..."</b>
Shades of Adam Smith. But there is a property of government's hand that is even better than invisibility. It mostly produces the same results as invisibility, but its name makes it easier to understand and talk about and think about.

pop quiz reminder
What is the most important difference between a free society and a dictatorship?
There is no deadline. Just think about it as we discuss, and if you have any ideas go ahead and share.

Right, of course. Just wanting to make sure you guys don't think of 'the dictator' as AWAYS being just one person.
