Hi Jim, everyone on this board has just got into the habit of talking about the speed of gravity. If someone wants to make a point, they dont really want to write a few pages on what they mean by the speed of gravity, or light for that matter.

If we say that h = c^2 / b^2 then h is a mere number, it doesnt have any dimensions. If we divide six apples by three apples, the answer is two, its not two apples. But, as Ive said, h is a measure of angular momentum, therefore we are talking about things which are spinning.

In a W shaped energy profile of a particle, the angular momentum at the edge is h. The angular momentum at the top of the spike is also at h. The angular momentum at the bottom is one. So h is not a constant but it it is very important as a boundary condition of the one to one correspondence between gravitational space and electromagnetic space.

Maxwells daemon gatekeeper doesnt have two boxes of unequal temperature gasses, he has two spheres, one miniscule and one huge. He alters the volumes and thereby the mean free paths, to transfer energy states.

Now for the odd stuff. A particle as a point, or as a huge gravitational wavelength, or as a smaller electromagnetic wavelength, is the same size. Its in one to one correspondence. As soon as we allow an exponential to gravity, we can then look at the problem as an informational one.

The universe can play reciprocal games. The reciprocal of a huge number is a very small number. We can see gravitational space as being bigger than electromagnetic space or informationally much smaller. Try telling a bunch of five year olds that the world was bigger in Columbus day, and watch the alarm in the brightest ones.

I suppose one avenue to explore with regard to information theory is that of quantum numbers and bits of information. After all, the universe has a part of itself that can actually use logic; I dont count myself here!

Another thing to look at is the universes payment system for compound interest. Pop in to see this bank manager and tell him/her that youve noticed that there are little bites taken out of the exponential curve. Newtons bank has a continuous curve, and therefore gives a better return.

The manager shakes his head, as they all do, Were not talking money here, we are talking about everything that you are. There is nothing outside for us to invest in, in fact you work for the bank and the whole shooting match is the banks capital. All those little bits, snipped out, go to pay huge amounts to particles that have become so energy poor that they cross the y axis. In short were making new stuff for you to live in. Newtons bank, down the road, is our underwriter.

Back to the speed of gravity. Force is a vector, it has magnitude and direction. If there were a photon and a graviton sitting on Jupiter and the graviton let the photon take over the driving wheel for a while, then Jupiter would crash. The photons vector would be pointing towards where the sun had been about fifty minutes before. The graviton knows where the sun is almost instantly.

Sloat, Lots of good stuff in your latest post. The Jupiter item is a rerun and still good but the apple item really gets my blood boiling because you can't do what you and others suggest. We can't divide apples by apples=can't multiply apples by apples. Another poster has pointed out in another thread at this site that Newton generated a big problem by writing kg^2 which also can't be done. It seems since Newton did it its ok but its not ok in reality. It might be ok within math restrictions and of everyone does it all the time.

Sloat, About force-it seems gravity does not play by the rules other forces seem to follow. In the application of force energy flows from one point to another except when gravity is involved. In orbiting bodies the force is pushing one body toward the other and applying the rule force times distance equals energy doesn't work or so it seems to me. As an example: the Earth accelerates toward the sun at .006m/s^2 so it is being forced to move .003m/s toward the sun. Moving the mass of the Earth .003m/s requires quite a lot of energy that must show up somewhere but it does not. So, can it be assumed no energy is required to force the Earth to orbit the sun or is there something wrong with the logic? A falling body gains energy but the Earth clearly is not gaining anything from the force of gravity from the sun. Same thing applies to all orbiting bodies- they all fall but don't gain energy.

Hi Jim, I tried to find that board comment about Newton but the site search engine isn't much use. I suspect that the poster is just mistaken. There's nothing in Newton's laws to suggest that the mass unit can change. Newton would have worked in lbs and ft rather than kgs and metres, he would have given his answers for the weight of an object in pounds force. Now we should give the weight of an object in Newtons but we don't. This confuses lots of people, I suspect that that's what's happened with the thread poster.

The question about orbits. In the simplest case there are two vectors, at right angles, acting on the orbital body, not just one. Newtonian mechanics explains what happens but doesn't explain why it happens. Nor does the famous rubber sheet of curved space time, beloved of science shows, that try to explain Einstein's concepts.

The upshot is, that if the orbit is a perfect circle, then no work is done by a planet in orbit round a sun. In practice there will be work done as the earth is attracted to the sun but the sun is also attracted to the earth.

Hi Jim, something that might amuse, or alarm, a couple of nights ago I had a dream. I was in the lecture hall of the Royal Society, feeling rather bored and annoyed. The lecture was being given by one of my old maths lecturers.

This guy was a pedantic old sod, who had to always be addressed as doctor. He habitually wore an immaculate lab coat, though he never set foot in anything so pedestrian as a lab. Half way through a sentence this man would stop turn to the roller black board and write a horrendous lump of calculus, this in such a scrawl that it might as well have been in dog latin. He would then say yes to himself and roll the board up out of sight before anyone could make sense of it.

My fellow students were mad keen but one could sense that they too were a little annoyed. These were long haired combat jacket and jeans people. Very much the maverick type of engineering and science students. They were there because something of import was being said. I couldn't make head nor tail of it.

The lecture was about how an f.m. transmitter would deliberately distort the broadcast signal. We even listened to a bit of Handel so distorted. I looked down at my handout to see if that helped any. It had been prepared by Bell labs. The lecturer kept talking about Bell doing this and that. On the first page was a transmitter and receiver circuit but there was also a sticky attached.

It said "Bell's theorem. Not related to Billy then!!!" it was signed Sally. This woman was a family neighbour who loved to point out how much of an idiot her husband Billy was.

I woke up and thought I'd look up Bell's theorem but forgot until now. First thoughts, yeah, the electromagnetic electron and the gravitational electron are certainly entangled, in fact the electron in this dual aspect is twinned with itself.

Perhaps though my dream was to tell me to let somebody else do it, leave it to the other students at the lecture.

The CERN song

( to the tune of Paddy and the Barrel, or the bricklayer song)

Dear Sir, I write this note to you to tell you of me plight.
And at the time of writing I am not a pretty sight.
Me body is all black and blue, me face a deathly grey,
And I write this note to tell you why I'm not at work today.

While working on the cern project, some gold I had to steer,
Now to bash it round at such a clip 'twas not a good idea.
Einstein wasn't very pleased, he bein' an awkward sod,
He said I'd have to smash them for a particle called god.

Now doing all the maths by hand it was so very slow
So I asked a passing dalek for the sums I didn't know.
For Eigen states and suchlike come quite natural to them.
So I fired up the great machine, on the count of one to ten

But in me haste to do the job I was too blind to see
That all this quantum field stuff was much heavier than me,
So untying those wild forces, the gold it turned to lead
And I thought it might be prudent if I toddled off to bed.

Well, the lead it shot off round the pipe, transmuting all the time
And when it got just half way round 'twas neither pearls nor swine
Somewhere under France I think the atoms came full stop.
And the country isn't there no more, it vaporised the lot.

Well, you'd think that I'd be laughing when the pipe it was no more
But hyper strings and black holes are a two way quantum door.
Liechtenstein is sadly missed, at least by those that saw,
It disappear forever, violation of some law.

Now black holes with bulimia were free to sport and play,
The better half of Europe was consumed in but a day.
I thought it might be better if I handed in my cards
But the admin. block had been in France, and now was sadly charred.

The idea that I might get the blame, came quickly home to me
But then again why worry for the land was all now sea.
Hawking could accept the blame, a slip of his slide rule.
But phase change had escaped my mind, I felt a total fool.

Phase change doesn't hurt that much, it's really rather fun,
It's pointless trying running when there's nowhere left to run.
So look now on the brighter side, don't cry and whinge and fuss.
Cruel aliens will not not hate my guts, the word they'll use is us.

I'll grant you that the real estate will never be the same
The pursuit of mega science though is surely worth the game
I'll grant you that i made a gaff, and maybe it was big
But be cheerful lads and raise a glass, at least we found the higgs!

I send to you my sick note that i post by fast wormhole
In the hope that explanation may go part way to console.
An end to fiscal crisis is a drop of sunshine's ray
Then I hope you'll understand dear chief, why I'm not at work today.
