I'm sorry if my explanation is still not understandable.
I used terms like 'falling' to explain a concept. Technically we are not truly falling to the sun but is a similar effect. The best would be to see it visually explained but with a message board like this it is kind of difficult to put motion in a well. I suggest trying to find a good book or video about orbital mechanics and try to see why the earth does not need an engine (or exhaust for that matter)

Your explanation was wrong n I indicated to you why. Your effort is appreciated.
I got a half-a-dozen books on orbital mechanics. So what? How many have you got? So what? During the dark ages there were many books of the earth being as flat as a football field. So What? Many made concvincing arguments about it. So what?
I am not asking questions because I haven't read any books mate. I am because I've read several and none are convincing.
Nothing "falls" so any illustrations of it not necessary. Maybe something else is happening like "hanging in there" but it ain't falling. Speed increases and no explanation is given as to the mechanics of it other than "momentum is conserved". So what? Someone figure out the math of momentum, so what? Don't tell me it stays there because momentum is constant. Tell me why momentum should be constant in the first place. There you go now running back to the books. You won'd find answers there mate, just questions. Don't answer me with a question please mate.
Time to increase momentum and get those cars fixed.

The questions are good ones for sure. One way to measure the distance to the sun is by the redshift caused by the radial velocity of the elipital orbit of Earth. That data is what I have been searching for. Do you know how to find data on the redshift of the sun that is caused by the radial velocity of Earth? If the redshift is measured then the orbit can be determined exactly and the calculated stuff can be put aside. I'm with you on this.

Mechanic,
I can't figure out what your problem is. Orbital motion is well understood and planetary motion in the solar system is nailed down pretty much to a gnats ass. You like to play this game of knocking down explanations while proposing no solutions of your own. You want a physical explanation, Tom gave you one, gravity being caused by kinetic motion of particles. Tom may be wrong, perhaps gravitation is an actual force produced by the bodies themselves. The Earth is only speeding up and slowing down with reference to the Sun. The Sun moves relative to the surrounding stars and from that reference frame all the planets move at a CONSTANT velocity on a helical path. Just as an observer using the Earth as reference frame must invent all kinds of fictitious forces to explain things so also fixing on the Sun requires us to talk about exchange of potential and kinetic energies. Pick the frame that is least complicated and much complexity is avoided.

This is more along the lines of the topic's title:
I am reading earth's orbit is elliptical and as a consequense of that it must change it's speed near the perihelion and the aphelion so that it's angular momentum stays constant. My question: why don't we feel the speed change or do we? How big is that change? I know for the speed to change even a bit some energy is needed or fuel. Where's that coming from?
Any rocket scientists here. I just fix cars. If this question is stupid my apoligies to you in advance.

I hate to do it but I'm having a hard time reading your messages.
Why you keep saying: "I am an idiot, I fix cars, I am an idiot, I fix cars, I'm an idiot, I fix cars".?
What is the matter with you? For you kind of interests and questions I doubt you are a "total idiot" like you say.
It is time to grow up.
