nearby white dwarfs

No way to know what? That they were SN events or just when the event occured?

What happened is answered by theory (a supernova). But as you are well aware, theories are not always reliable. -|Tom|-

Still, the nearby stars should be well known or at least looked at once in a while. The two dog stars have something orbiting them that called a white dwarf and WD objects are said to be a result of a SN event. My own personal perspective aside is there any reason to think they are a result of a SN event? And if not how did they get to be WD objects?

So, according to models of SN events; WD are a result of the event. So, since there are hundreds of WD objects nearby orbiting many kinds of stars how can the SN process(typeII, I think) be explained? The type of star that existed prior to the event is said to be a red giant that is absorded by a partner.
