Thanks Mark. Thanks Larry.
You know, it's interesting, when we were kids growing up, the party-line on Neil in the family was that "he was one-track minded". Everybody used to say Neil had a one-track mind. Naturally, as a kid I didn't know if that was true or what it meant, but I think I know now what they were talking about. I wouldn't say that would be the best way to explain it though. One-track minded implies only one subject of interest.
I would say he was "single-minded" or resolute, on any subject he believed in, or was interested in at the time. As in: Neil was single-minded in his belief that there were artworks on Mars, and that the faces he was seeing were not pareidolic in nature.
That's not something I was going to crack, no matter how logical my argument seemed to me. But it was fun for awhile, and I think we stirred up some interest, up to a point.

I just learned of this sad news tonight, December 22, 2009. I had read Neil's book "Apocryphal Science" and was keenly interested in a person with this level of inquisitiveness yet with critical faculty. When I learned he would be going to the cosmological conference in Port Angeles, Washington, I immediately signed up. Easy trip since I live in Redmond. I had two valuable days talking with Neil. We took the trip to Hurricane Ridge together. If he had any medical problem, he hid it well and made no hint of it.
Most interesting person I have met in a great many years. I was looking forward to his next book "Kuhn's Law". His passing is actually a great loss to science.
