Tom, can you give us an example of that? Or a link? I'm not sure what you mean by that.

It offers a link to "Download compressed raw data in PDS .IMQ format". That's the original raw data just as it arrived from the spacecraft. -|Tom|-

Ok thanks. That's what I thought at first, but then when I looked, I saw the word "processed" in the previous line, and just missed the word "compressed" in the last one.

Do you need special software to view a PDS.IMQ file. I vaguely remember seeing something about Unix?

Sounds like you're in a conundrum, in that you see this as a perplexing question or problem. What do you see as the solution?

I think Photoshop does, but I haven't tried in years, so I'm no longer sure. Few have the time or patience to deal with raw data because every channel in the CCD has a slightly different sensitivity, so all raw images appear to have stripes. This camera effect must be removed from the raw data by "flat-fielding" or some other means. Various techniques have been developed by people who need to work at that level.

Having tried it, my conclusion was to settle for the GIF version of the images, which is as close to raw as I care to get. -|Tom|-
