I have no problem with this post in general. I don't know that one can put a time table on when one should consider someting viable. that is it tracks out to here therefore it is valid. Perhaps "is likely valid" or even "valid to this range". But just as we have learned Newtonian gravity is no longer valid on galatic scales (thousands of light years in time scales),etc. setting a boundry to declare viability I think is a mistake. one starts to theorize about uncertainity then 200 hundred years is E46th to large or for gravity it is 5E5 to small.

Also I think your statement applies in a much broader way than you assert.

After I studied 40,000 books I thought I had a good number of percepts, precepts, concepts, premises, hypotheses and theories with which to build a model of reality. However, in every case there was always someone else who could immediately shatter all the theories I developed. I then learned that for every theory there is an equal and opposite theory to neutralize it. Just as there is a Judas for every Jesus to neutralize both, and a universe with a this side and an other side to neutralize both.

The bottom line is: The universe wants us in this special place in the middle of the circle of action...the neutral center.

Until you realize this, you are just going around in ...circles.

Where did you ever get the idea that you could avoid making such elementary mistakes after studying only 40,000 books?


The generally accepted rule of thumb is 512,000,000 books to avoid mistakes. I'm only at somewhere around 350,000,000 books and I find that I do still make a mistake every once in a while. Well, technically they aren't mistakes any more, but to the average person they look like mistakes. So I go ahead and count them that way.

(Don't worry, you'll get there. It looks a lot harder than it actually is.)

A few tips -

* you can't just study a book. You have to actually understand it, then go on to master it. Of course this takes longer, so be sure to set aside a few more hours each month.

* Do NOT, under any circumstances, try to study more than about 5,000 books simultaneously. It really is possible to become confused. The actual limit varies with each person obviously, and if you are like most of us you will have to push it until you find your personal limit.

* Some books are actually difficult to master, and I've developed a technique that seems to speed up the process.

* * First I re-write the book in my own words. This forces me to think more deeply about the subject, and exposes any weakness in my understanding.

* * Then I have it published. If it doesn't make the top ten on the best seller list (non-fiction category) I repeat the process until it does. (Some of my best stuff has come from a third or fourth re-write.)

Well, believe it. It all boils down to this: effort vs significance.

Top ten is good enough for a background chore like this. Trying to make number one on ALL of them is just too much like work.
