How can anyone know if they want to talk about a particular idea, until they know what the idea is?

Each reader does an independent evaluation of each post they read. And responds or not based on where their interests lie.

I'd say your chances of getting a dialog going with someone here are better than 50/50. But there is only one way to know for sure.

Well okay...
I think TVF(Dr. Tom VanFlandern) may be partially correct with his "Pushing" hypothesis however, IMHO it doesn't happen the way he describes it. I say partially correct because I do believe that gravity is caused from a "PUSHING" type of effect but not by gravitons pushing "ON" things but rather from "COMPRESSION".

All "physical" things have mass and all mass has gravity. You could probably even say that mass = gravity. Okay, so where does the gravity come from? We know from e=mc^2 that light, which has no mass, converts into mass and the mass instantly has gravity. How did this mass less photon suddenly appear as a physical object having mass and gravity?

Here is my hypothesis; pure energy requires no space, light is the speed at which energy travels, as energy slows below the speed of c it becomes subjected to the effects of "PURE SPACE".(not an atmosphere, the dimention-PURE SPACE) "SPACE" now encapsulates the energy and "COMPRESSES" it. Gravity and Mass are simply compressed energy. As layers begin to form on the outer layer the compression on the inner layer becomes greater. An example of this would be taking a balloon, attaching a very heavy weight to it and dropping it in a deep part of the ocean. As the balloon get further down the greater the "COMPRESSION", eventually it will burst.

Okay, now to the good stuff- the experiment. An easy example of this hypothesis is to take a large coil spring and 2 straps, weight them(which is simply just a gravity reading), compress the coil spring and strap it with the straps, re-weigh. Now observe that the compressed spring weighs MORE. The gravity is greater most people conclude that the mass is greater because the spring has stored the energy used to compress the spring. See, stored or "COMPRESSED" energy.

A few corrections Patrick -

*) Photons, and all other forms of energy, do exhibit the phenomenon of gravitational attraction.

*) Energy in the form of photons does indeed travel at the speed of light. But other forms of energy travel at other speeds.

*) I'm pretty sure that the mass change of a compressed spring (due to the energy added during compression) is a text book example. But if not, I've seen similar things on the Web.

Don't get discouraged. It is astonishing just how true that old saying (there is nothing new under the sun) is. The least frustrating way to come up with something really new is to spend the time and enegy to find out what is already "known". (I put known in quotes to signify that not everything we know is accurate.) Then you can start looking for gaps or errors.

A lot of people waste a lot of time by trying to save time by not doing their homework. (I'll bet you that sentence is as hard to read as it was to write.)

My students recreated the spring experiment twenty times in two separate classes using very delicate electronic scales. I noticed mass changes only within the error of the scale. Compressing the spring does cause the metal of the spring to expand allowing air molecules into the system. The whole experiment needs to be conducted in a vacuum. I simply will not subscribe to the notion that the conservation of mass is so easily defeated. Other bias can be localized changes in the density of the weighed object affecting the delicacy of the scale, gravitational effects could also come into play. Mark

Yes, but you are jumping the gun. First you must answer the question; What is MASS?
I know you already know that answer, obviously it's ENERGY, a GREAT big amount of energy <b><u>COMPRESSED</b></u> into a teeny tiny little package. Why does it only take 9 pounds of plutonium to produce a 50 megaton explosion of ENERGY? What causes the reaction to occur? It happens because of an <u>IMPLOSION</u> of the plutonium. The plutonium is COMPRESSED to the point of critical mass and voila...E=mc^2...50 megatons!

Another example for you is the space shuttle. Out in space there is no(or very little) gravity. The MASS of the space shuttle becomes teh local gravitaional field. Throw the garbage out the door and it will start orbiting the shuttle. Making any sense yet?[?]

Take the space shuttle, COMPRESS it down into a tightly packed wade, compressing it a tightly as you can and it will have a greater gravitational field.

So you see, my hopothesis about gravity is a type of "PUSHING" however it is the outer "STUFF" PUSHING/COMPRESSING the inner "THINGS" rather than "STUFF" PUSHING "THINGS" towards other "THINGS" by way of "GRAVITON".

It's the good old inverse square law at work.

You take the mass/gravity of 9 squares, COMPRESS that down into 4 squares, then compress it down into 1. The COMPRESSION effort takes energy and COMPRESSED ENERGY is called mass and MASS has GRAVITY.

This hypothesis also explains dark matter but that is a different subject. First you must understand the basics.[8)]
