First, go into the forest where trees fall fairly frequently and record a tree as it falls. "Bamm-whoosh", you see the tree fall and hear it, and also record it on an audio tape. Take the tape back to a lab, and open the audio into sound studio software and note the waveform of the sound. Save the file.
Next...
Go back to the forest and place the recording device in the forest and leave it there the amount of time expected for the next tree to fall.
Come back later and retrieve the tape. Load the audio into the sound studio software and examine the waveform. You'll see that a tree fell, and made the same sound required to make the same waveform as it did while you were there. No ears are involved.

Gentlemen, I've had a wondrous time over the past few days following this thread....truly remarkable thinking here!
I would like to add a few words based on my "kiss" methodology.
Time, in its essence, cannot exist without conscientiousness "observing" its passing. Without consciousness, there is no time. Therefor; time is conscientious and consciousness is time....simple.
Merry Christmas all!

But isn't that the same thing as Fred's assertion that without an ear to hear it, there is no sound?
Time is merely a convention (a word to describe it) created by man to have something to call the passing of the days (sun comes up and goes down), "moons", and seasons (sun changes position in the skies), and as man became more knowledgeable, the rotation of the galaxies, expansion of the universe and all sorts of things.
Nothing changes if man isn't there to observe it.
Merry Christmas to you too!

pareidoliac- a recording device is an ear. All that exists in the universe is what one perceives in the here and now. Hard to believe from Newton's viewpoint but it is what first hand experience shows at it's most simple way of looking at things.

Nothing exists if conscientiousness is not present. So no, a tree does not fall in the forest, only if it is observed (sight or sound) falling. Without observation the tree still stands. If it is seen or heard as fallen, then conscientiousness must be present. Conscientiousness and time are the same, there is no duality
Or, 13.75 billion years ago, conscientiousness was born and since then, the stuff is everywhere, we've been cleaver enough to name it "Life".
"Now it's off to Mars and let's win there"!

Time is a measure of change - if nothing changes (at all scales), time stops. So at absolute zero temperature (a measure of the rate of vibration) time stops too.
Real is if two or more independent observers agree on a set of observations, then that which was observed is defined as physically "real".
