This is not something that I'm going to spend any more time thinking about. Columbo would go down to Lightwork Labs, spend 10-20 minutes talking to them, and that would be it. I've seen him do that exact thing many times. The lab people would tell him how they do your pictures from negatives all the time, and then they might get a little aprehensive that an LA Homicide Detective is asking them questions, so they might say something like, "you don't think we did anything wrong, do you?" To which he'd answer, "no no, nothing to worry about, I don't think you did anything wrong."

That's about it. I don't think we need to slice it and dice it any more than that.

Hi Pareidoliac, I wonder if you've tried making an hdri image from one of your shots. The results could be interesting.

The basic idea; let's say I want to take a photo inside an old church. I, f.stop the shot for the lights but lose detail in the darks, f stop for the darks and wash out the lights.

An hdri image combines a number of f stopped shots into one image. There is a free app to do this, I think it's called hdrishop.

The Mark 1 human eye ball does some clever stuff just to see light levels in woods. Ask any photographer about camera settings for a woodland shot, and listen to them moan on [8D][]

Stout- i'm going more in the opposite direction. Just shooting and printing "flat." This gives the greatest detail. Shooting as you suggest with multiple f stops would lead to more interesting art work than shooting "flat," but for shadows flat shooting and printing brings out the maximum in natural details, which is my ultimate goal. (To let "god" do the maximum, and the "artist," do the minimum as so well described by Andre Guides quote sited previously.) i originally adjusted light/dark contrast levels to get the black and white in each print, as i knew that's what most other people appreciate best (film noir look.) But now i'm going to purity, nature and detail. Thanks for your suggestion though. -fred-

I agree with you Fred, that big G always seems to be leaning on his shovel, get him to work[] The hdri idea was just out of curiosity. I think that these latest shots of Mars look pretty hdri to me. Photographs which we're not used to seeing yet. Are we more or less likely to see images in hdri images.

hdri by the way, stands for high dynamic range images. Where they are used a lot, is in 3d computer graphics. An obviously man made dinosaur can look like it's in a real environment because an hdri image is around it and bounces the light of its hide.

Stoat- i guess more choices as with hidri can never hurt except for cost. i don't see how it would enhance the shadow photos.
