I agree. Religion is a negation of science and thought.

JMB,
Are you the authority here or moderator? , if you are we submit if not why should we?
Alan
I feel as if I am a small boy holding but a teaspoon of knowledge standing before the Infinity Ocean of all knowledge

JMB,
I cannot agree that religion is the negation of science and thought or that the word god is meaningless. Religion in the most general sense means the practice of what we believe. For example, we don't harm others for personal gain all the time because we are afraid of getting caught and punished. We act right because we believe it is the best thing to do regardless of observational evidence. We develop personal ethics based on belief systems that consider joy, harmony, peace, satisfaction, etc, not science. Even the word god simply represents the majority of existence which we don't know and cannot know. It is hubris to think that what we know is larger or more important than what we don't.

To me the word "God" equates to "Existence", two words for the same reality
I dont know about you guys , but I am thankful for my existence
I feel as if I am a small boy holding but a teaspoon of knowledge standing before the Infinity Ocean of all knowledge

JMB,
The originality of humans is their excessive degree of vanity, but that is part of the overall design. It arouses the curiosity that is necessary to look beyond the ordinary pursuit of comfort. Universally admitted concepts are often later overthrown and only the very latest theory is considered modern enough to be relevant. Unfortunately, religion as it is practiced gets no closer to the truth of reality than science does. Probability theory comes closest to anaylzing the present moment where we always are and so many will always worship the math. The elephant in the room that all seem to ignore is the fact of life. We are alive, for now. What does that really mean? We are aware. Awareness exists and it is the attribute of life. The question is, does awareness exist without us. As I said before, physics, chemistry and life are the building blocks of what we try to solve with our scientific method.

I agree, but this may be unhappy. Personally, although I taught for a long time the formalism of quantum mechanics, I consider that this formalism is a pure (and useful) phenomenolygy, while its principles and quantum electrodynamics are absurdities. The big bang is an absurdity too.

Religions are negations of logic, of thought; they can only help to delay the development of knowledge; it is not strange that they support the absurd deviations of science.

Maths are not a topic of worship: they are blocks of thinking, just as a good program of computer gives a result in a reliable way, from a starting point supposed reliable.

They are the most developped forms of science. But, an ape who uses a stick knows that using it will allow him to get fruits from a tree or insects from the earth. It (or he?) has a scientific behaviour that human do not have when they pray.
