Rich, you are asking a couple of great questions here and I would like to try and respond the best way I can to answer these. This will be tough to digest because we will be starting to walk along "a road less traveled" as the saying goes. But I want to start of by telling you that I am being sincere even though this will undoubtedly be difficult to digest.
So to begin, put your boots on because we are about to jump down the rabbit hole and have a cup of tea with the Mad Hatter!
The phenomenon you are referring to, is where one person see's one thing and another person see's another. This is due to the mind of the creator who has created them. This applies to faces, figurines and ALL other images which have been created on the surface. This "Alien" mind "see's" differently than human do and as such, creates artistic imagery in 2D, 3D AND in multiple dimensions. So...depending on the "view point" as well as the frame of mind (recognition capability) of the viewer, will depend largely on which "dimension" the viewer is receiving the image. This is critical in understanding how this works.
The creators of the surface designs (in their various depth of dimension) intend for the designs to be seen in various realities. Or, to put it bluntly "they create optical illusions" which are effected by the mind of the receptor, the angle at which the view is located as well as (and this is important) the distance to which the viewer is located to the target creation. (More on this later)
I have come across many of these creations, they are quite ubiquitous on the surface. They confuse and dumbfound the viewer. But one does get to eventually understand them and truthfully, they are all absolute works of art.
So let's take a look a particularly good example.
In this first image Face A, the arrow points to a wonderful topographical rendition/creation of a snowman's face. This may take you several moments to compile the face in your mind's eye. You will start to see the tell-tale design of a "pointed" carrot nose typical of a snowman head. The face is at a somewhat oblique angle where "his right eye" can be seen as a large black triangle. His left eye is not seen as it is around the left hand side of his head and out of sight. His strange shaped mouth is the large "crinkled" area underneath his carrot nose.
The second image is a magnification for closer inspection.
When you have captured the snowman in your line of sight AND in your mind's eye, then scroll down and I will describe to you the second face WHICH RESIDES IN THE SAME FACIAL SPACE.

What I want you to do now, is to focus on the snowman's "crinkled mouth" and DELETE IT in your mind's eye. Try to imagine that this black area of the mouth no longer is there.
Now...try to look at the remaining composition of the snowman's eye and say to yourself...IT IS NO LONGER A SNOWMAN'S HEAD BUT IS NOW THE HEAD OF A CONTRIVED FELINE HEAD.
Try to picture the head as follows:
1. What was once the carrot nose is now the WIDE OPEN MOUTH of the feline. (get this and you will be almost there)
2. At the sharp point of what was once the carrot nose (now the mouth) just above the sharp point is the "button nose" of the feline.
3. On the right hand side of the felines face is a large "dark area" which "punctuates" his contrived cheek.
Once you see the felines face in it's entirety, sooner or later, you will be able to switch back and forth between a snowman and feline head. Viola!
Now it is tempting to say to yourself "what the heck is a snowman doing on Mars?". My advice, just drop the thought as it WILL get more and more bizarre if you chose to join me "down the rabbit hole!"
These multidimensional faces are everywhere and they are quasi "fractal geometric", which means the further the distance, the more the design will morph to another facial design or conceptually..."as above...so below"!
Again, as I understand this, the residents responsible for all of this DO NOT resource their creations, evidently, they have the capability to modify or change matter at the molecular level. This is why you will rarely see any "sharp edged forms" as one will clearly see when looking at the buildings in Madrid from local satellites. More on this later.

That would be such a cool study. You are brilliant.
It could be done with already presented images. Just show them to several groups and tell them they are the latest from Mars.
BTW, although I do see not-right-side-up images, they are also not-commom.

Malcolm, I don't want you to get mad, because I really do enjoy this, but I always tend to assume you read everything here that came before you.
This kind of thing has been bantered around the whole time. Show Fred a picture like that, and he'll find 5 faces you didn't even see yet, and then when he explains them to you, you'll see them too.
The pareidolic experience is very mysterious. It's both a "personal" and a "shared" experience, where each observer adds his own personal twist to it.
